MANDARIN TEA ROOM

The Mandarin's Tea Room is the speakeasy of tea parlors....

Located in a super obscure 2nd floor location on Howard Street; you'd have to know someone who knew someone to tell you about it.  Here the tea is treated as an art and is taken very seriously.  You can take tea tasting classes and/or buy artisan teas.

This is a fun place to be for those of us who aren't big drinkers!  Tea is much healthier.  Tell them I sent you! =)

9/11 and CHINATOWN

In Chinatown, there has been extra security for the week of 9-11.

This has made it harder for people to come into the city and has been difficult for businesses.  In a Daily News article, they reported that

  • Some 23% of Chinatown's residents were unemployed in the three months after 9/11, due to layoffs in the garment and restaurant industries, according to the Asian American Federation of New York.
  • Unable to park temporarily near the old historic section, tourist buses have taken Chinatown off their itineraries.
  • The number of tourists visiting Chinatown once numbered 2,000 a day; last year, a daily average of half that number stopped at a Canal St. kiosk to ask for directions, tourism officials say.
